In 2025, the Law Centre of Advocates (CDA), in partnership with UNHCR, supported the implementation of the grant programme within the Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Chair (SVMAC) network, contributing to the development of a strong platform for collaboration between universities, experts, and communities.
Implemented between 15 June and 30 November 2025, the programme generated significant interest from the academic community, with 22 proposals submitted. Following the selection process, 12 projects were supported and implemented in partnership with six national universities.
The projects covered areas such as health and psychosocial support, legal research, digital education, economic rights, and intercultural inclusion, directly engaging:
- over 250 refugees and host community members
- over 150 adolescents and youth
- more than 70 representatives of institutions and law enforcement bodies
- 60 refugee women who received medical and psychological support
Academic initiatives were transformed into concrete actions with direct impact on refugees and host communities.
CDA’s role was to facilitate this process by ensuring a transparent and competitive selection framework, as well as providing support for the implementation of the initiatives.
Through this joint initiative, CDA and UNHCR contributed to promoting applied research, developing innovative solutions, and strengthening the role of universities in the protection and inclusion of refugees.
The Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Chair (SVMAC) grant programme continues in 2026, offering opportunities for the academic community to contribute to the promotion of refugee rights and social inclusion.
Funding will be provided under two categories: academic research grants and advocacy and institutional engagement initiatives. SVMAC member universities in the Republic of Moldova may apply through teams composed of academic staff, researchers, and students from bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programmes.
The SVMAC programme represents a platform for cooperation between UNHCR and member universities, aiming to strengthen the role of academia in promoting the protection of refugees and stateless persons in the Republic of Moldova. It supports relevant academic initiatives capable of generating knowledge, contributing to public policy development, and fostering the social inclusion of displaced persons.
