Acquisition of citizenship in the Republic of Moldova
Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is acquired by birth
A child shall be considered a citizen of the Republic of Moldova if he or she is:
Born to parents, at least one of whom, at the date of the child’s birth, is a citizen of the Republic of Moldova;
Born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova to parents who are stateless persons or beneficiaries of international protection or political asylum;
Born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova to parents who are citizens of another state, or of whom one is a stateless person or a beneficiary of international protection or political asylum and the other is a foreign citizen, provided that the child meets the legal conditions to be recognized as a stateless person.

Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is acquired through recognition
A person over the age of 18 who has knowledge of the Romanian language and of the provisions of the Constitution and who does not possess proof of holding the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova;
A person born abroad who has at least one parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova;
A person who was born and resided, until 28 June 1940, in Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina, the Herța region, or the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as that person’s descendants;
A person deported or displaced from the territory of the Republic of Moldova starting from 28 June 1940, as well as that person’s descendants.
On the basis of an application submitted by one of the parents or by the sole parent, a child shall be recognized as a citizen of the Republic of Moldova if he or she is:
Born abroad and lawfully residing on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, where the parent has previously acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova. The requirement of lawful residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova shall not apply to a child whose parent acquired or reacquired the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by recognition;
Born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova to parents who are citizens of another state, or of whom one is a stateless person or a beneficiary of international protection or political asylum and the other is a foreign citizen, provided that, at the date of submission of the application, at least one of the parents lawfully resides on the territory of the Republic of Moldova or has acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.

Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is acquired through adoption or guardianship
A child who is a stateless person or a beneficiary of international protection and who is placed under the guardianship or curatorship of citizens of the Republic of Moldova, or where one of the guardians or curators is a citizen of the Republic of Moldova and the other is a stateless person or a beneficiary of international protection, shall acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova as of the date of establishment of the guardianship or curatorship. The guardians or curators shall decide by mutual agreement, or the matter shall be decided by a court.
A child who is a foreign citizen and who is placed under the guardianship or curatorship of citizens of the Republic of Moldova, or where one of the guardians or curators is a citizen of the Republic of Moldova and the other is a foreign citizen, shall acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova as of the date of submission of the application to that effect by one of the guardians or curators, with the consent of the other guardian or, as the case may be, curator.

Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is obtained through regain
A person who has lost the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova may reacquire it, upon application, provided that he or she has knowledge of the Romanian language and of the provisions of the Constitution, subject to certain conditions or exceptions provided by law.

Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova is acquired through naturalization
Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova may be granted upon request to a foreign citizen or stateless person, who has taken the test to assess the level of knowledge of the Constitution and the Romanian language and has legal sources of income in compliance with one of the following conditions:
Has resided on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for at least the last 10 years. For stateless persons, refugees and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection and political asylum, that period shall be 8 years
Has resided on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for 5 years before reaching the age of 18
Has been married to a citizen of the Republic of Moldova for at least 3 years and has been continuously resident in the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the last 3 years
Has resided in the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the last 3 years at parents or children (including adoptive parents or adopted children) citizens of the Republic of Moldova
