CDA’s legal advisors work together with community mediators in order to solve the problems faced by Roma refugees faster and more efficiently. The knowledge of the culture and traditions of the Roma ethnic groups, the specificity of their lifestyle, the relationship of trust between the community mediators and the beneficiaries facilitates the dialog with them. Community mediators convince Roma refugees to turn to the CDA and explain to them in simpler language the legal procedures to be followed.
Over the past two years, with the support of community mediators from Slobozia and Bender, CDA legal counselors in Tiraspol have helped many Roma displaced from Ukraine to solve problems of varying complexity.
Community mediator Raisa Dumeniuc frequently turns to the CDA with requests on behalf of ethnic Roma settled in the city of Slobozia. Our legal counselors in Tiraspol often meet with her to discuss cases requiring the intervention of the association’s lawyers.
Cooperation with community mediator Vasilisa Avturova also makes it much easier to work with beneficiaries.
During her latest visit to the CDA office in Tiraspol, for example, were tackled problems related to Roma access to identity documents, accommodation, discrimination against Roma in medical institutions, employment, problems with Roma children’s enrolment in the education system, lack of school supplies and clothes for school.
It was also possible to solve some problems related to the provision of medical services to Roma refugees: they will be able to perform prophylactic medical examinations at the Ambulatory and Medical Assistance Center in Bender.
“With the help of the community mediators, we are able to identify the needs of the beneficiaries more quickly, better understand their legal problems, find the most appropriate solutions and take prompt and effective decisions,” says the legal counselor CDA, Veaceslav Popescul.
