The war forced them to leave their country. They took refuge in the Republic of Moldova, which is closer to home. Irina is from the city of Odessa, and Raisa and Tatiana – from the Nikolaev region. They came to our country at different times but faced similar problems in adapting to the new realities. They have learned how to overcome them and now offer help to their fellow countrymen.
Irina, Raisa and Tatiana are members of the network of active Ukrainians, created by CDA in collaboration with five partner NGOs, within the project “Improving access to justice to live in dignity”, implemented by UNDP Moldova, with the financial support of Germany.
Together with 22 other members of the network, these three women participated in several events organized by CDA, where they learned practical information about temporary protection measures, how to defend their rights, where to turn in case of need, and then help their fellow countrymen to solve legal or integration problems in our country.
Network participants have become leaders in Ukrainian communities in several localities of the Republic of Moldova. “The project helps us to get the necessary help in legal matters. We are like guides for our compatriots,” says Tatiana.
Raisa also found herself helping her fellow countrymen: “I like to help people, not just stay in a foreign country and not know what to do”.
Irina remembers the cases when, thanks to the knowledge she gained during the project, she was able to guide some people through the procedure of obtaining temporary protection. “There are many situations where a person does not know what to do. In one case, a girl could not apply for temporary protection because she did not have any confirming documents about her whereabouts. I helped her because I was informed by CDA about the changes in the procedure for applying for temporary protection. In this way, I am making people’s lives easier, and I am glad to be able to help them”.
The network of active Ukrainians was created in September 2023. It is made up of 25 refugees from Ukraine who have settled in Moldova.
