CDA welcomes the vote in the first reading of the amendments to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, which will exclude the risk of statelessness among children born in our country.
Since 2018 CDA has been warning decision-makers about the need to amend the national legal framework on the situation of children born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova to foreign citizen parents.
CDA appreciates that the association’s approaches have been taken into account and that, by making the mentioned amendments, the national legal framework will be harmonized with the provisions of the UN Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, the UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
In the Republic of Moldova, as of June this year, there were 1898 stateless persons with recognized status.
The promotion and protection of the rights of stateless persons is one of the core areas of activity of CDA. Law Centre of Advocates is an associate member of the European Network on Statelessness.
CDA collaborates with this international organization to research and compile comparative information on statelessness in Moldova and contributes to the development of the Statelessness Index in Moldova.
