Border police officers attend a refugee law seminar
On 08 February 2013, UNHCR Moldova organized a seminar on refugee protection in mixed migration movements for 28 newly recruited border police officers that were enrolled in a 6 month pre-service training program at the National Border Police College in Ungheni town, prior to their deployment at international border crossing points, border police posts and regional detachments.
UNHCR presentations focused on relevant international and national legal framework, correlation between refugee protection and mixed migration, admission of asylum seekers to the territory and asylum procedure, their referral to the central asylum authority, documentation issued to asylum seekers and refugees.
The seminar that was organized under the framework of the EU-funded Regional Protection Programme in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, Phase II, ended with the examination of case studies that triggered lively discussion and a question and answer session. Most active border police officers received UNHCR public information materials and symbolic prizes.
